Pennridge Water Resources Plan

Pennridge Area Basin Inventory Report

This report was prepared as the result of two pertinent projects funded through two different programs of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PaDEP).

The first project, Stormwater Inventory and Retrofit Prioritization, was funded and administered under a Pennsylvania Coastal Zone Management Program (CZM) Grant.

Coastal Zone Management (CZM) usually receives an annual grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). These awards provide for a portion of the funds to be used for projects to further the implementation of the CZM Program. The funds are distributed through sub-grant awards to state and local government agencies and nonprofit groups located in or having facilities in the Delaware Estuary or Lake Erie coastal zones. The second project, Pennridge Area Stormwater Facility Inventory Assessment and Retrofit Prioritization Project, was funded and administered under a Growing Greener (G2) Grant.

These two projects (hereafter known as CZM project and G2 project) have similar objectives and the study areas are adjacent to and overlap, making it appropriate to form one report for both projects.

Purpose of the Study

The objectives of the CZM and G2 projects are listed below:

  1. Improving the water quality of the watersheds and stormwater facilities in the course of inventory, assessment, and retrofit prioritization processes.
  2. Reduce pollution loading from already developed areas; include techniques and activities to prevent nonpoint source pollutants from entering surface water.
  3. Implement specific recommendations of the Pennridge Water Resources Plan and address existing drainage problems in the East Branch Perkiomen Creek watershed.
  4. Address the specifications of the Act 167 water quality and groundwater recharge requirements.
  5. Prevent pollution by means of educational programs, public meetings, fact sheets, websites, etc.

The future benefits of these projects include the elimination of obstructions in streams, improved water quality, added protection of the health, safety, and welfare of residents and property, and ultimately, the reduction of flooding problems in and around the area.
